A divorce is a legal separation of a couple. If you have a civil marriage your divorce will be dissolved using the Divorce Act. Divorce can be stressful and confusing for couples and families and there is no easy way to get through the legal process or to recover emotionally.
When you say “I do”, getting divorced may be the last thing on your mind. In our society today, way is given to divorce when:
- There has been an “irretrievable breakdown” of the relationship, which means that you and your partner can no longer live together and there’s no chance of you resolving the matter
- One partner cheats on the other.
- One partner abuses the other.
- You no longer love each other.
Many see these and more as good reasons to file a divorce. In as much as our society today see divorce as an option to failed marriages, we should not ignore the depression and emotional trauma that comes as a result of such. Instead of undergoing such pain, we should however seek better solution to marriages when is not as rosy as it was.
Happiness in our relationships is not a constant state of being. It comes and goes. Perhaps that’s what makes happiness so wonderful. If we felt it all the time, it wouldn’t be as special. So, for the times when adversity strikes, have the courage to face it. Don’t be afraid or procrastinate when it comes to difficult conversations. The sooner you address the issues, the faster you can fix them.
