Black Men Convicted For 47 Years Now Freed: Three black men convicted on the evidence of a corrupt police officer for 47 years ago have been freed. The convicts are; Winston Trew and Sterling Christie, now both 69 years old and George Griffiths, now 67 years old, were arrested along with Constantine “Omar” Boucher at Oval Underground station in 1972.
The freed convicts have urged anyone else who might have been wrongfully convicted on the evidence of the corrupt police officer to challenge their convictions. They made this known outside the Royal Courts of Justice: “They should come forward and contact the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).”
The convicts added: “If you are innocent, don’t give up.” Mr Boucher has not been cleared because the CCRC has been unable to trace him.
Police had accused the men, who are now known as the “Oval Four”, of stealing handbags. Their arrest was done by a patrol known as “the mugging squad”, which was set up to target thefts on the Northern Line.
